The internal biological clock

During the day, the brain accumulates metabolic waste. The stages of sleep: a nightly journey

Sleep is not a uniform state. It is composed of several cycles of approximately 90 minutes, which repeat four to five times a night. Within each cycle, two main phases alternate: NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. 

  • NREM sleep (stages 1, 2, 3, and 4): This is the deepest and most restorative sleep. Breathing and heart rate slow down, and muscles relax. It is during the deepest stages of NREM sleep that most physical recovery occurs. 
  • REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement): Also known as “paradoxical sleep,” this is the phase in which dreams are most frequent.
